Ohhh the winter, whether you love it or hate it – it’s something that we all experience.  Not only do WE experience the winter weather, but our skin does as well.  You’ve probably noticed that your skin goes through some changes during the winter months that it doesn’t necessarily do during the other times of the year.  With so many different elements in skin care (especially for the winter) you might be left wondering what the actual winter skin care do’s and don’ts are – right?  Well if that sounds like you, you’re in the right place because that’s exactly what we’re dishing on!

The Do’s
We like to start things off on a positive note as often as possible, so let’s start with the do’s of winter skin care shall we?  First things first, now that the weather is officially feeling like winter it’s time to reevaluate your skin care routine and adjust some things.  Since your skin is going to be lacking a lot of moisture this time of year, you need to help your skin get what it needs from your skin care products.  This means opting for skin care products that are creamier and more moisturizing to give you that extra boost you need.  In addition, you’re going to want to step up your moisturizing routine – like WAY up to combat a lot of the dryness.  Look for moisturizers that are more creamy overall and apply them more often than you probably do the other times of the year.  In fact, just start carrying a moisturizer with you to have throughout the day.  In addition, don’t forget to make sure that you’re exfoliating your skin regularly (experts suggest 1-2 times per week) this will help get rid of dead skin cells and really help your skin to better absorb your moisturizing products.

The Don’ts
We discussed the major do’s for winter skincare, but we couldn’t leave out the don’ts –because they’re just (if not more) as important.  As tempting as it is, avoid taking long hot showers.  We know, we know when it’s cold outside a nice long hot shower (or bath) is the first thing you want to do to warm up but the thing is the hot water and taking a bath/shower that’s too long can cause more irritation and dryness to occur on your skin.  And we know you don’t want to be dealing with any more dryness or irritation this time of year.  Another big don’t is to skip the lip care!  So many people tend to forget that their lips are actually made of skin and need some skin care love as well.  Apply the same rules as the rest of your skin with exfoliating and moisturizing to keep from getting those dreaded chapped lips.  While we’re on the topic lips, our final don’t is skipping the ‘smaller’ areas of your skin like your hands, feet and neck – remember that they need moisture and care as well, and tend to get quite dry this time of year so make sure you’re not skipping them.
