As we begin to gear up for the summer season, most of us are starting to plan all of our favorite outdoor activities to enjoy with the warm weather. While we all know about taking care of our skin in the summer weather, it’s just as important to make sure that you’re taking similar care of your hair in the heat. To keep things simple, because you know we’re all about realistic beauty advice, we’ve rounded up five summer hair care rules to live by this summer season. Here’s to healthy hair, and enjoy the summer weather!
Keep Your Hair Covered
You’ve probably heard experts (and us) talk about keeping your skin as covered as possible during the summer season. But the truth is, you should be applying that same rule to your hair! A common misconception about our hair is that it’s not effected by the sun and summer heat-but, oh it is. One of the best ways to keep your hair well protected during the harsh summer months is to keep it covered. Using a hat, scarf, or something similar to literally keep your hair covered is going to keep it healthier and under much less stressed during the summer.
Don’t Wash Too Often
Most of us feel that in order to keep our hair clean and healthy, we need to be washing our hair every day. However, doing so can actually cause more harm than good. When we wash our hair we’re stripping our locks of its natural oils and moisture. So, washing too often can cause a lot of damage to our hair. This is especially important to understand during the summer months, since the sun and heat tends to drain a lot of the moisture/hydration out of hair as well. Make it a habit to not wash your hair more than 2-3 times per week.
Avoid Too Much Heat
Similar to what we mentioned above, our hair can be very prone to dryness during the summer months. Since it’s hot outside, and our hair is under a lot of external heat sources experts suggest backing off on how often you’re using heated styling tools in your hair styling routine. Use heat as little as possible, and give your hair a break as much as you can to keep it healthy and happy.
Focus On Moisture
Going off of everything we’ve mentioned above, focusing on adding as much moisture into your hair as possible is essential. Of course, using a quality conditioning product when you do wash your hair is going to be necessary. In addition to using your regular conditioning product, you’ll definitely want to get into the routine of applying a deep conditioning treatment to your hair at least once a week.
Think SPF is JUST for your skin? Well, you thought wrong. Just like our skin, our hair needs some UV protection from the sun as well. We realize that you may not always be able to keep your hair covered from the sun, so using hair care products that have UV protection (aka SPF) is going to help keep your skin protected.
